"Ealing's councilors met to debate at the Town Hall on Tuesday, 1 November 2022.
The Conservatives put forward a tightly worded motion that invited the Labour leadership to describe the progress it has made on the redevelopment of the Perceval House site, the conversion of the Town Hall into a hotel, a replacement for the much-loved Gurnell Leisure Centre and falling recycling rates across the Borough.
Labour councilors chose not to answer these critical local issues, instead using the opportunity to criticise the Conservative government.
Only Cllr Deirdre Costigan answered directly but wanted to be thanked for recycling rates that had fallen continuously from 2017 to 2021.
Labour's motion made little mention of Ealing, focussing instead on bizarre demands for a general election that lies outside the council's jurisdiction and may not be called before late 2024 or even 2025.
Residents need to consider whether they can have confidence in Labour councilors who refuse to accept responsibility for what lies under their direct control.
Conservatives doubt Labour's ability to deliver any part of the much-trumpeted Council Plan and will continue to scrutinise and call out the leadership."
