Ealing Labour last night used the traditional mayor-making ceremony to introduce radical changes to the system of councillor allowances.
This means that the changes have not been properly scrutinised or debated in the council chamber.
Special allowances for the Council Leader, Deputy Leader, cabinet members and portfolio holders have all increased well ahead of inflation, for cabinet members by as much as 148%."
This at a time when prices are rising and Ealing families are suffering shortages.
Cllr Julian Gallant, Leader of the Conservative Group, said:
“Tonight Labour showed no respect for hardworking people in Ealing. Not only has Labour dramatically raised payments to senior leadership, they have also introduced an unworkable scale based on the amount of hours a cabinet member is working elsewhere!
Conservatives oppose a rise in councillor allowances, which are paid from your tax."
