Starting on Sunday, Ealing & Hillingdon commuters face travel misery due to five consecutive days of Tube strikes. London Mayor, Sadiq Khan, has the power to intervene to protect Londoners by invoking the Strikes (Minimum Service Level) Act, securing minimum service levels during the strikes. He has refused to do so.
Henry Higgins, the Conservative GLA candidate, stands with the GLA Conservatives in urging Mayor Sadiq Khan to take decisive action under the act, ensuring the uninterrupted commute of local residents to and from work.
"Sadiq Khan needs to prioritise the well-being of Ealing & Hillingdon residents over trade union interests," asserts Mr. Higgins. "The Strikes (Minimum Service Level) Act empowers Mayor Khan to address the imminent disruptions and ensure that local commuters are not left stranded during their daily journeys."
Highlighting the stark contrast between Mayor Khan's commitment to zero strikes in 2016 and the upcoming 140th strike under his leadership, Mr. Higgins underscores the immediate need for resolute action. "Ealing & Hillingdon residents will hold Mayor Khan accountable when the Tube network grinds to a halt next week," he adds.
Transport for London predicts severe disruptions from Monday to Thursday, with services starting later than usual on Friday. The Elizabeth Line and several other rail operators serving Ealing & Hillingdon are also expected to face partial service amendments.
Mr. Higgins concludes, "As Mayor and Chairman of TfL, Sadiq Khan has the responsibility to prioritise the needs of Ealing & Hillingdon residents. The impending strikes not only pose a threat to daily commutes but also risk significant economic impact on local businesses. It's time for Mayor Khan to act decisively in the best interests of our borough, and I stand united with the GLA Conservatives in urging him to minimise the impact of these disruptions."
